Kirwa - was ist das?

Oh Kirwa never end - Kirchweih at Gebenbach

For all English speaking people all over the world, kirwa.net has found an explanation for "Kirwa", described by the Kirwa at Gebenbach:

In May 1976, the Saint Martin church at Gebenbach was ceremonial dedicated. Since then, the traditional Kirchweih has been celebrated on the weekend prior to Pentecost each year. From Saturday through Monday, the catholic youth group and the local organizations organize the successful "Kirwa".

It starts an Saturday with putting up the Kirwabaum (ceremonial decorated tree). The tree ist organized by the "Kirwaburschen" (local boys), the night or evening before the event. In addition, the date and prior owner's name will be carved in the "Kirwabaum". With joint efforts and support by the strong Gebenbach men the tree ist placed into the ground. On Saturday at 8 p.m. there is fun and dance with entertainment provided by a youth band. The Kirwa couples dressed in their traditional folk costumes participate at the fests church service in the Saint Martin church on Sunday morning. Aferwards, Bratwurst and bier will be served during the Frühschoppen along with musical entertainment by the Gebenbach brass band. After lunch the Kirwamoidln (local girls) will be picked up from their homes with colorful decorated wagons, music and pulled by horses. The Kirwabaum is celebrated with traditional dances, demonstrated by the Kirwa couples. An alarm clock ist set up and flower bouquet is passed through the different dancing Kirwa couples. During the dance when the alarm clock rings, the couple with the flower bouquet in their hand will be designated as the head Kirwa couple of the year. There is music playing until late in the evening and friends meet at the market square. On Monday, Gebenbacher food specialties invite the local companies and their employees to eat lunch at the fest tent. People young and old always look forward for the "Gebenbacher Kirwa". Why don't you stop by?
